About Baea
Baea (pronounced bay-a and referring to a natural bay) symbolizes the meeting of home and nature. Baea create beautiful, contemporary home textiles and objects derived from natural materials such as Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton, silk, merino and alpaca, in designs that are specifically made to last.
Fair Pay and Good Working Conditions
Baea work with two family-run reputable makers in Portugal, Italy, and two Artisans in Mexico and Philippines which they have visited. They prioritize worker’s conditions and ensure fair pay. Sustainability means minimising their impact on the environment whilst making items that last. They work with expert communities around the world, prioritising the quality inherent in traditional artisanship.
Sustainable / Organic Materials
Baea prioritise fully biodegradeable materials – from their packaging to the plant-based button, each of which is made from an ingenious material called Corozo, derived from the nut of the Tagua Palm.
Sustainable Practices
All Baea bed linen is made from 100% organic cotton that is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified — the most respected and trusted certification for the farming and manufacture of textiles. Organic agriculture yields high quality cotton without the use of toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, GMO seeds and unsustainable irrigation practices, whilst encouraging biodiversity, food security and more equitable communities. Baea have chosen to work with only light colours to minimize the dyes and chemicals used in the process. During the processing stage, forty percent of the water required for finishing their fabric is recuperated and reused.
Animal Welfare
Baea use silk, wool and alpaca in their accessories.
Sustainable Packaging
Baea packaging materials are fully biodegradable. Their products are packaged in a reusable fabric pouch. Their business cards and swing tags are printed on 100% cotton paper which is made from recycled cotton waste.
Social Responsibility
Baea plan to never run a site-wide sale. Their photography is genuine and ‘real’ and they apply standard industry mark-up across all their product pricing.
Charity / Community Contributions
Nature provides both inspiration and raw materials, so every year Baea like to give something back — contributing to the preservation of ecologically important sites or planet-focused causes. By partnering with organizations, donating a percentage of profits, or volunteering time, Baea aim to both offset part of their activities and learn more about how they can do better for the planet they call home. This year (2020) they are making a contribution to the Jurassic Coast foundation to preserve a coast line that is adorned with incredibly diverse geology which inspired much of the design of their Rock collection.
